Charles Goldie’s 1938 portrait of Wharekauri Tahuna is nothing short of an artistic tour de force. In his execution of this work, Goldie deployed the technical finesse which he had perfected over the course of an entire career to maximum effect, allowing him to powerfully express the likeness and mana of Wharekauri Tahuna. This masterful composition titled, Thoughts of a Tohunga: Wharekauri Tahuna a Chieftain of the T?hoe Tribe, 1938 (Lot 32) by C F Goldie is set to headline International Art Centre’s Important & Rare Art auction on the 26th of November.

Included in the sale after being held in a prestigious private collection for 31 years, Thoughts of a Tohunga: Wharekauri Tahuna a Chieftain of the T?hoe Tribe, 1938 (Lot 32) epitomises all the formal qualities characteristic of the later period of Goldie’s artistic production. Goldie’s skill is exemplified further by the smaller, but no less striking, composition Portrait of Tumai Tawhiti, Chieftain of the Ng?ti Iwi Ng?ti Te Akau (Lot 33) which comes from the same private collection. These two masterful compositions by C F Goldie are included in International Art Centre’s Important & Rare Art auction, which is to be held on Tuesday 26 November.
At the Art + Object sale of Important Paintings and Contemporary Art in Auckland on 13 August 2024, the purchaser of Gretchen Albrecht’s Nightfall, Purple Sky (lot 49) had to stretch their budget to acquire one of the best works by the artist to come on the open market. This example of her colour field paintings from the 1970s was exceptional, and in pristine condition. Often these works are faded and the white of the canvas discoloured but this work looked as fresh as that day it was painted in 1973. An internet bidder went head to head with a consultant in the room, who was successful at $90,000, from a $70,000 low estimate.

Auction Review: Art + Object, Auckland, Important Paintings and Contemporary Art in Auckland on 13 August, 2024

Although it’s still cold in Auckland, there’s a hint of spring in the air. The evenings are getting lighter and the sun, when it appears is warm. Murmurs of a potential interest rate cut coming later in the year and earlier than expected have provided some optimism. The art market could do with some good news. During the last six months the primary and secondary markets have been really tough, and when the market is flat, it’s hard to find and consign major works, so the catalogues can feel devoid of those headline paintings which the auction houses build a sale around.

The International Art Centre Important & Rare Art sale on 30 July 2024 in Auckland returned a very strong $3.3 million underpinned by the sale of the two works by C. F. Goldie which together realised $1,332,000. A much talked about and much admired painting from the auction was Don Binney’s Swoop of the Kotare (Lot 50), an image based on one of the artist’s most popular works. The estimate of $800,000-$1,200,000 priced it at the top of Binney’s oeuvre and certainly well above sales of other works on paper by the artist. The opening bid of $650,000 was topped by an internet bid $675,000, but unsold, and the work was sold by negotiation the next day for $700,000,

Auction Review, Important & Rare Art, International Art Centre, 30 July 2024

With three television cameras positioned prominently at the back of the International Art Centre auction room for the start of their Important & Rare Art sale on 30 July 2024 in Auckland, there was an air of anticipation about the crowd which numbered over sixty.

Auctioneer Richard Thomson confirmed that one of the cameras was recording content for breakfast TV the following morning where he was due to discuss the art market, and another was filming for a documentary on the artist Buck Nin. There’s nothing like the pressure of tv cameras to keep an auctioneer on their toes in the auction room!

Headlining the Important & Rare Art auction is Don Binney’s iconic ‘Swoop of the Kotare’ (Lot 50). With the visual intensity and hyper-clarity of a dream, ‘Swoop of the Kotare’ is a powerful amalgam of two important subjects from earlier in the artist’s career: the bird in flight and Lake Wainamu, a short distance inland from the beach at Te Henga, where he maintained a studio for nearly two decades.

Auction Review: Important Paintings and Contemporary Art, Art + Object, Auckland, 27 March 2024..

Two days following Art+Object’s sale of 6 works by Charles Frederick Goldie, we were back in their rooms for the Important Paintings and Contemporary Art sale in Auckland on 27 March 2024. The fewer attendees in the room for this sale, were bolstered by the presence of many of New Zealand’s art consultants, suggesting a strong offering from the auction house. Early lots sold well, and auctioneer Ben Plumbly moved the sale forward quickly and efficiently.

Six paintings by Charles Frederick Goldie consigned from the estate of Christchurch collector and benefactor Neil Graham, were worthy of their own standalone sale, which took place on Monday 25 March, 2024 at Art + Object in Auckland. Highest price was realised by Te Aho-o-te-Rangi Wharepu, a Noted Waikato Warrior (lot 3), which realised $1,720,000 and set a new record price for the artist’s work at auction.

Auction Review: Six Paintings by Charles Frederick Goldie (1870 – 1947) from The Collection of Neil Graham ONZM (1943 – 2015), Art+Object, Auckland 25 March 2024

Six paintings by Charles Frederick Goldie consigned from the estate of Christchurch collector and benefactor Neil Graham, were worthy of their own standalone sale, which took place on Monday 25 March, 2024 at Art + Object in Auckland. To include six works by the artist, whose prices are consistently some of the highest in the market was a risky strategy by the auction house, and it would be considered a high profile fail if the paintings didn’t sell.

At the International Art Centre Important & Rare sale on 26 March 2024 in Auckland, top price in the sale was realised by a signed version of Banksy’s well known image, Girl with Balloon (lot 48). There are 150 of these from the edition of 600, which are more valuable than the 450 unsigned prints in the edition. The screenprint was sold on a lone bid of $500,000, left with the auction house prior to the sale

Auction Review: Important & Rare Art, Auckland, 26 March 2024

It’s been a busy week of auctions in New Zealand due to Easter and school holidays, with the three Auckland based auction houses scheduling their sales over three consecutive nights. Maybe their clients had already left on holiday as it was a smaller crowd than usual assembled in the rooms at International Art Centre for their Important & Rare sale on 26 March 2024, with about 55 in attendance, but the auction was buoyed by a large number of online bidders.

Included in International Art Centre’s signature Important & Rare Art sale on the 26th of March is Brent Wong’s seminal masterpiece, Establishment, 1969 (Lot 32). One of the twelve paintings which comprised the artist’s first solo exhibition held at the Rothman’s Cultural Centre in Wellington in August 1969,

A highlight of the auction is a selection of paintings from the Estate of Patrick Hutchings. Professor Hutchings wrote extensively on the philosophy of art for leading publications such as Landfall. Brent Wong's masterpiece, Establishment, 1969 (Lot 32). is a classic Brent Wong composition. The characteristic combination of blue sky, sea, dry grassed hills, fluffy white clouds and ghostly white architectural elements mark the work as dating from the first decade of his exhibiting career.
