It is refreshing to see a collection of blue chip investment art, although modest, come back onto the market at a Perth auction house. With 156 Lots and a value between $1-1.2 million this auction includes a good selection of important Australian artists.

This is the GFL Fine Art Winter Auction, their first major sale for 2010, to be held on June 1 in Perth. Profiled on the cover of their winter catalogue is Tim Storrier's Blaze Line  (Lot 42 ), with an estimate between $65,000-85,000. A similar work, with the same title sold in the Deutscher & Hacket auction in April this year for a hammer + BP for $69,000, it will be interesting to observe if the Perth market has deeper pockets.

Other highlights within this auction consist of a collection of works by David Boyd’s with the larger, Turks at the top of the Cliff, ANZACS Climbing (Lot 38A) 95 x 116 cm, estimated between $45,000-55,000; Ray Crooke, Island Morning (Lot 82 ), estimate $14,000-16,000; Robert Dickerson, The Siblings (Lot 53 ) Estimate: $12,000-14,000 and Guy Grey-Smith, Broome Coastline  dated 76 (Lot 44 ) with an estimate between $38,000-45,000.

There are a few works which have come up for auction over the past few years, that are being offered again in this auction. Albert Namatjira, Central Australia Near Alice Springs (Lot 33 ), estimate $12,000-14,000, sold in 2004 at GFL’s for $18,700. Sidney Nolan's Ostrich (Lot 9 ) has an estimate of $9,000-12,000. This work was purchased at Deutscher and Hackett, 2004, for $7,800. In 2007, John Perceval’s, Custom’s House, Williamstown  dated 1949, sold at Sotheby’s Melbourne for $10,200. GFL have this work sporting a different title The Woodpile with an estimate of $18,000-22,000

I will not at all be surprised if this auction will be well received by the Perth audience, as this collection is sure to satisfy the bidders from the dry spell, we in Perth, have had of important Australian art.
