As the rise in the acquisition of works by women artists increases, International Art Centre’s Contemporary art auction sees the inclusion of a number of significant works by women artists featured in their September sale. One such example is the exquisite seascape by Joanna Margaret Paul, Salt Water Pool at St Clair (Lot 21 ). With a distinctly post-modern approach, Paul was known for interdisciplinary approach to art making and the composition included in this sale is a superb example.

Another standout composition in the auction is the jewel like painting by Helen Brown, Hills (Lot 2 ), which captures the artist’s fluid brushwork across the rolling hills of the landscape depicted. Brown’s work has seen increased interest in recent years and this composition in particular is a fine example of her working practice.

Included in the Collectable sale are three rare bronze works by New Zealand sculptor Paul Beadle, Lidded Bowl (Lot 25 ), Paper War (Lot 26 ) & The Burnt Ones I, Algiers Harbour 1943 (Lot 27 ). He was also the foundation president of the New Zealand Society of Sculptors and Associates in Auckland in 1962. Drawing from a diverse array of influences Beadle’s sculptures reflect his interest in the Hallstatt Culture of the early iron age & West African Ashanti bronzes. He was best known for his small-scale sculptures, which were distinguished by the artist’s wit and satiric edge. These characteristics are clearly evident in the works included in this sale.

A significant collection of fine art prints are also on offer in the forthcoming auction, including outstanding examples by Don Binney, Swoop of the Kotare, Wainamu (Lot 22 ) Max Gimblett, Enso Circle (Lot 30 ), Gretchen Albrecht, Pounamu II (Lot 6 ) & Dick Frizzell, Amazing Grace (Lot 62 ).
