An auction highlights of the forthcoming Theodore Bruce auction of The Peter Black Collection | Modern & Contemporary Art, on 29 January 2024 is an Artists Proof silkscreen, Grey Square 1969 by British modernist Brian Rice, (Lot 1849 ), estimated at $400-600.
Peter Black built his art collection whilst sourcing mid century and modern art, homewares and collectables for his Darlinghurst interiors store. His collection is being offered over three auctions spanning
Decorative Arts,
Aboriginal & Tribal Art, and Modern & Contemporary Art. Of the 184 lots on offer here, there’s a good selection with low to moderate estimates, which may appeal to new art buyers and collectors of multiples.
Among the auction highlights is a vibrant abstract by British artist and writer, Patrick Heron,
January 19, 1973, ed. 20/72 (Lot 1818
), an Artists Proof silkscreen,
Grey Square 1969 by fellow British modernist Brian Rice (Lot 1849
) and
Manhattan 1969, ed. 61/200 (Lot 1814
) by American painter, printmaker and sculptor, Richard Anuszkiewicz. The visually arresting
Planetary Folklore Participations Composition No. 1 1969 (later impression) by the ‘godfather’ of Op Art, Victor Vasarely (Lot 1811
), is one of two Vasarely works on offer.
Amidst the higher profile local artists, there’s an oil on canvas by William Dobell –
Study for Gentleman Conversing with a Prawn, The Wangi Pub (Lot 1841
) – completed in 1970. Trimmed from a study illustrated in Virginia Freeman's 1970 book,
Dobell on Dobell, it’s one of four studies Dobell completed with a view to consolidating them into a single painting.
Also represented is Tracey Moffatt, who of course her mark in the 1980’s with the unique cinematic narrative of the
Something More series. There is one photograph here from the follow up 1998
Backyard Series, where she captured her siblings in make-believe plays -
Planet of the Apes 1973, ed.12/60 (Lot 1864
).
