Born in Switzerland in 1814, Buvelot travelled widely and spent long periods in Brazil, India and the East Indies before migrating to Australia in 1865 for health reasons. He brought with him the styles and techniques of Europe at that time, which gave much to Australian art. Buvelot was a pioneer of 'plein air' impressionism in Australia. In 1869 the Melbourne Gallery purchased two works. A large work was sent to the London Exhibition in 1872, which was awarded a gold medal. His influence on the Australian art scene was immense. Buvelot was a confederate of John Ford Paterson, Tom Roberts, Julian Ashton and Fred McCubbin, etc. Known as the grandfather of Australian landscape painting he was an inspiration to the artists of the Heidelberg School.
