John White was born in Edinburgh in 1851 and migrated to Australia aged 5 with his family in 1856. A landscape, portrait and genre painter, he studied at Dr Brunton's school, Melbourne, in the late 1860s, the Artisans' School of Design in Carlton and the National Gallery School, Melbourne. He travelled to the UK in the early 1870s and studied at Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, 1873 - 1879. He exhibited at the Melbourne Public Library Exhibition in 1869, the Victorian Academy of Arts in 1870 and the London International Exhibition in 1873. His paintings were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1877 and at other major exhibition venues in London. John White was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1882. He died in 1933 in Devon, England, UK.
