Born in Ballarat, Victoria in 1862, May Vale studied at the National Gallery of Victoria and at South Kensington Art School, 1875-1878.. She became a teacher, painter and enameller, her enamels including Australian landscapes and large scale pieces such as Egyptian and Greek style vases. She undertook further study in London and at the Academie Julian in Paris in the early 1890s.. On a trip to Europe from 1906 to 1908 she taught enamelling in London.
