Born in Adelaide in 1884, Sutherland was a niece of artist Jane Sutherland (1853 - 1928). A painter and writer, she studied at the National Gallery School under Bernard Hall from 1902 to 1907. A floral and landscape painter in oil and watercolour, she exhibited with the Victorian Artists Society and was a member of the Council from 1914 to 1916. Ruth Sutherland was also She was also a member of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. She contributed numerous articles to the Melbourne 'Age' and to 'Art in Australia'.
