Born in Queensland in 1950, Ian Smith studied architecture at Queensland University and art and design at Prahran College, Melbourne. Primarily a figurative painter and a teacher he has exhibited solo mainly in Sydney and Brisbane from 1972. He has won a number of prizes at art shows throughout Queensland. Exhibitions of his work, Best of Ian Smith Works on Paper was held at the Woolloongabba Art Gallery, Brisbane in 2018 and Ian Smith: Flesh and Bone at Noosa Regional Gallery in 2020.
