Peter O'Doherty was born in 1958 in Auckland, New Zealand and immigrated to Sydney with his family in 1968. In August 1977 he joined the band Mental as Anything with his brother Chris (aka Reg Mombasa), and as a self-taught artist, he did not commence painting until 1988. He often uses buildings as the primary subject matter for his paintings, inspired by observing his carpenter-father construct houses. In 2005 he won the Paddington Art Prize and in 2007 the Allan Gamble Memorial Prize of the Mosman Art Prize. Residences awarded include Turkey, New Zealand and Coffs Harbour. He has held solo exhibitions mostly in Sydney since 1993, and has participated numerous group exhibitions as well co-exhibiting with his wife, fellow artist Susan O'Doherty.
