Born in Christchurch in 1930, John Bevan Ford is a contemporary Maori painter, sculptor, wood carver and lecturer. After attending Wellington Teacher’s College, he studied art at Dunedin College. He was an art lecturer at Hamilton Teachers Training College and in 1974 moved to Palmerston North to lecture at Massey University in 1974. He became a full time artist in 1987 and in 1990 he presented a series of lectures about Maori and New Zealand art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In 1998, he was artist-in-residence at the British Museum, London.
We have records of art auction sales by John Ford from 1999 and in total 127 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 101 (80%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $10,402 for Untitled sold by Webb's in December 2022. This year 12 works have been offered for sale. Works by John Ford are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Auckland Art Gallery and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
