Surrealist painter James Davis was born in Sydney, and studied at The National Art School and Julian Ashton’s School of Fine Art. He spent much of the 1960s in Europe, painting in Germany from 1964 to 1968. In the 1970s he gave up painting and worked in publishing as an art director. He returned to painting in the mid 1980s and in 1993 returned to Europe for three years, living and working in Hungary, the Czech Republic and Belgium. On his return to Australia he continued his painting career.
