About John Cornwell
John Cornwell, was born in 1930 and raised in Sydney. He is a modern traditional painter in oil, of mostly rural subjects, as well as a sculptor. He studied at the National Art School in Sydney and worked as a commercial artist in his screenprinting business. He became a full time artist in 1970. In In the early 1980s he spent several years working in Central Australia. His work has been reproduced as prints and decorative plates. His best-known work is the bronze statue of Matthew Flinders' ship's cat 'Trim', purchased through public donations, and installed outside the Mitchell Library in Sydney in 1996.Since his first solo show in 1973 he has held over 36 one-man exhibitions.
