Born in 1935 on the North Island of New Zealand, John Coley was an apprentice journalist and art critic before training to become a painter. He studied at Palmerston North Technical College and The Canterbury School of Fine Arts. Coley returned to Christchurch inspired by a contemporary exhibition in San Francisco. He taught at Christchurch Teachers' College and later became a director of McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch.
