Aby Altson was born at Middlesborough-on-Tees, in Yorkshire in 1864. He came to Australia with his brother, Barnett Hayman Altson in September 1883, and from 1885 he studied drawing two nights a week at the National Gallery School of Design in Melbourne, and in 1886 he enrolled full-time in the School of Painting, studying with other noted artists such as Fred McCubbin, John Longstaff, Emanuel Phillips Fox, David Davies, Tudor St. George Tucker, and Fred Williams.
We have records of art auction sales by Abbey/Aby Altson from 1967 and in total 77 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 45 (58%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $341,600 for Children's Children 1889 sold by Sotheby's in May 2013. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Abbey/Aby Altson are held by the National Gallery of Victoria.
