Born in Melbourne in 1877, Victor Zelman studied at the National Gallery School under Bernard Hall from 1897 to 1901, and first exhibited at the Victorian Artists Society in 1919. He also exhibited at The Melbourne Artists’ Society, The Fine Art Society and The Painters and Etchers’ Society. His works in the 1920s and 1930s was strongly influenced by the paintings of Australian Impressionist painter Frederick McCubbin, who was drawing master at the National Gallery School at the time he was attending. His first solo exhibition of paintings was held in Melbourne in 1923. He travelled extensively in Central Victoria producing small paintings.
