Born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1880, Wheeler arrived in Australia at an early age. He studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne, and later in Europe. Best known for his nude studies and portraits, he won many awards, including the 1933 Archibald Prize. As a teacher at the National Gallery School in Melbourne he was respected as an exceptional instructor of technique.
